Shakespeare's Retreat
This spacious country room was the original master bedroom built by Elijah Smith in 1786. The room features many treasures, including the original barn doors, high ceilings, wide-planked hardwood floors, a spectular view, and a separate sitting room ideal for reading, relaxing and peaceful pondering. The sitting room could also accommodate a third guest.

Shakespeare's Retreat features a gorgeous, raised four poster hand crafted mahogony bed, with a pillow-top mattress, a cozy duvet and a luxuriously warm colors in the main room and a pretty wooden day bed in the guest suite. 'Tis perfect for a sweet Midsummer Night Dream, even in winter.

Why Shakespeare's Retreat? Beloved labs Mario and Shakespeare were the inspiration for The Paw House and it brings great joy to share them with our guests forever. Shakespeare's Retreat is the very special place where we celebrate the life of "Shakes" who loved the inn, our guests, and just about everything that involves life. It is with his timeless smile that Shakespeare invites you to enjoy his Retreat - the place he loved with all his heart.

Bad Dog!
This magnificent room exudes romance! Sunlight shining through two oversized windows bathes a regal king-sized, four-poster, cherry wood bed. Dream and relax in the sunlight, surrounded by high ceilings, wide-planked hardwood floors, ornate hand-stenciled border and beautiful countryside views

After a day of play, sleeping on an incredibly comfortable, king-sized, pillow-top mattress will surely be a highlight of your vacation. Here's Mario D. Dogg resting peacefully atop one of our custom built dog beds placed ideally to capture the morning sun.

Why Bad Dog? Well when we dreamed up the names of the rooms we thought that we would be fancy and name rooms "Good Dog and Bad Dog" in exotic languages. But we weren't that smart because we weren't too confident regarding the spelling words like bueno perro or buen chein and were concerned that we might butcher the grammar of a foriegn language. Then we saw that Steven Huneck had done some artwork of "Good Dog" and "Bad Dog" and we were instantly convinced. The names stuck - and we didn't lose any points for bad grammar, etc.

As a caveat...just to be sure the name Bad Dog certainly DOES NOT reflect their canine tenants - all dogs are good - only the owners are sometimes bad.

Good Dog!
This bright, cheerful corner room features spectacular views to the south and west and bright sunlight throughout most of the day. Curl up in an easy chair and enjoy a good book or simply gaze out the window at the 200 year old lilac trees and magnificent meadow outside. Beautifully decorated in soft colors and wide-planked hardwood floors, Good Dog! will welcome you home after a day of fun.

Climb into an ornate, antique, rosewood queen-sized bed furnished with a down comforter and a pillow-top mattress to sleep soundly, like Good Dogs do.

Why Good Dog? (See above...)

The Chase
This tells a comical 'tail' - the story of our beloved labs exercising their freedom in the hills of Monclair, NJ back in the days before the inn.
(See the poem below.)

If you or your dog has difficulty climing stairs please note that there is a private staircase consisting of 10 steps that leads to The Chase.

With oversized windows, the room has breathtaking views of our north meadow and Vermont's Taconic Ridge. Take in the New England countryside, a church steeple and Killington and Pico Peaks, or walk down your own private staircase to a roaring fire in the pot stove. (In winter, of course.)

A pretty queen bed and very comfy queen sized futon make this room ideal for people who enjoy sharing travel, but may not wish to share the same bed.

Why "The Chase"? When we lived in New Jersey, we used to hike with Mario and Shakespeare each day at Mills Reservation in Montclair. It was here that our goofy boys would chase anything that they could find, especially SQUIRRELS. Since then we have deeply internalized that this was irresponsible - yes -but ,without shame, here's the story Mitch was inspired to write:

The Chase was on!
And who was in first?
Why it was the squirrel
Who was fearing the worst

There were two thugs behind him
Fast on his trail
With terrible breath
And big as a whale

But the squirrel was sly
The squirrel was deft
He'd dart to the right
Then to the left

With no time to spare
He'd scale a big tree
With a smile on his face
He'd claim VICTORY!

Rin Tin Tin
This spacious room, offers a nostalgic look back on one of our favorite canine heroes. Old Rin Tin Tin comic books and movie posters adorn the walls and bring the adventure of the wild west to the peaceful countryside of Vermont's Killington range.

Located on the first floor, nearest to the side entrance, this room, like Dogwood and Spot, is ideal for dogs who have difficulty climbing stairs.

A cherry wood, wrought iron, queen-sized, sleigh bed, with a pillow top mattress, awaits you.

Why Rin Tin Tin? This show was one of Jen's favorite programs when she was a little puppy. So it became a dream come true for her to share her childhood star with you!

................................................................................................................................................................

Dogwood
This warm, inviting, first-floor bedroom offers soft petal-pink walls, wide-planked hardwood floors, high ceilings and peaceful views of the backyard meadow and treed hilltops. A hand painted dogwood tree blends into the picturesque scene of our backyard where on some mornings you may spy bunnies, deer, or even an occasional moose parading through the country setting. (Don't get your hopes up too high about the moose - we've had one in our many years here - it is more of a marketing gimmic than a reality - but hey you never know!)

Dogwood, like Rin Tin Tin, is also ideal for dogs who have difficulty climbing stairs.

A queen-sized, white maple, sleigh bed with a pillow-top mattress and snuggly duvet will carry you off to a peaceful slumber.

Why Dogwood? The soft pink walls immediately inspired us to think of a Dogwood tree and we commissioned Jen's very talented cousin to paint a mural. Along with the hummingbirds that call this tree home, this Dogwood"grows" on us and everyone who has stayed in this pretty space.

Spot!
This spacious, bright and cheerful room features its own privacy porch...a perfect SPOT to enjoy the evening breezes of each Vermont season. In the spring, summer, and fall, enjoy the peace of the adjacent wildflower garden, lilac trees, and foliage. It is too bad that we did not take any "before" pictures of the interior of this room as it has been completely transformed to one of the prettiest rooms in the house. Given its size and layout, Spot! is ideal for families. Also, like Dogwood and Rin Tin Tin, Spot is good for dogs and people that have difficulty climbing stairs. This beautiful room has oak flooring and bright sunshine throughout the day.

An antique country queen bed accentuates the warmth and comfort of this room. Of course our signature custom built dog bed ensures that your doggie rests as comfortably as you do after a fun day at play...

Why "Spot"? When we purchased the Inn in 2001 this room became the "spot" where we put EVERYTHING! (Including us!) This room was not available on our grand opening, but was forced into action when we accidently overbooked the inn for Martin Luther King weekend in 2002. (Jen was hanging the shower curtains while the people checked in!) Since that exciting day, Spot has become one of our most popular rooms.

The Bark Avenue Suite
Our ametuer photos cannot begin to capture the beauty and comfort of this oversized suite. Rustic, charming, comfortable, and cheerful, Bark Ave is the largest room in the inn featuring its own private entrance, living room area, private fridge, and bright, romantic bedroom featuring a king sized sleigh bed..

Your private porch provides a perfect place for a quiet romantic dinner or relaxing picnic where views extend from Paw House Park to the treeline of our backyard.

Why The Bark Avenue Suite? Mitch, Jen, Mario, Shakes, Brooklyn, and Drew called this room home until Drew cried too loud at night, woke up everybody, stressed out his parents, and forced them to move next door! Upon vacating, we held a contest to name the room and lo and behold Bark Avenue tickled our New York (ie. flatlander roots) enough to win the grand prize.
